Hyde Parker Magazine Endorsements For the March 1, 2022 Primary Election - Bob Libal

Travis County Commissioners Court Precinct 2

Bob Libal Can Spearhead a Progressive Movement

The Travis County Commissioners Court is overdue for a progressive overhaul, and Hyde Parker Magazine believes labor organizer Bob Libal is the right choice for Precinct 2 and the county as a whole.

A 20-year resident of Precinct 2, Bob is the progressive candidate on affordability, Green New Deal, and criminal justice issues. He’s promised to prioritize housing and rental assistance as a way of tackling the growing homelessness crisis in the region, and has been steadfast in his opposition to the county’s proposed $4 million women’s jail expansion.

Activist organizations – including Grassroots Leadership, which Libal led as executive director for eight years – successfully pushed for a delay in the project to allow for changes to be made and portions of the funds to be reallocated to the community.

That was against the wishes of Libal’s opponent, incumbent Brigid Shea, who has denied that Austin participates in mass incarceration and urged her colleagues to rubber stamp a plan that did not incorporate sufficient community feedback. Travis County deserves more than a commissioner who is more concerned with closing deals than community outcomes.

We also commend Libal’s promise to make the Commissioner’s Court more accessible to the community, particularly Spanish speaking residents, and believe his experience in organizing will help him meet that challenge. We also applaud his promises to streamline the rental assistance program, push a tenant's bill of rights, and oppose any lane expansion to I-35.
